Salsa Serving Bowl (Salsero) by Doña Valentina
We first met Doña Valentina through our mutual friend, Shelley Armistead, pottery buff and partner at the Gjelina restaurant group in Los Angeles. Shelley had asked us to connect with Doña Valentina during a sourcing trip, in hopes that we might purchase corn from her family in San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca.
As it turned out, we had been sourcing corn for years from within Doña Valentina’s community but had never had the opportunity to work with her in particular. We happily met with Doña Valentina at her home and al fresco pottery studio, where, sipping champurrado together early in the morning, she shared that she lacked surplus corn from the year’s harvest but hoped to work together when circumstances allowed.
We returned from the meeting, touched by Doña Valentina’s hospitality and also inspired by her talent for the traditional pottery her town is famous for–barro rojo (red mud/clay). We knew our paths would cross again.
In preparation for this holiday season, we commissioned a limited number of barro rojo salseros, or salsa bowls, from Doña Valentina.
