Hand Woven, Naturally Dyed
Hand Woven, Naturally Dyed
Our tortilla warmers are made from cotton grown in Oaxaca by Khadi, a project that involves over 400 artisans who farm, spin and dye heritage white and native coyuchi cotton into the cloth that makes up these pouches, a crucial component of the tortilla making process. The small farmers Khadi works with practice the ancestral tradition of planting the milpa, intercropping cotton with corn. Participating farmers are typically involved in the project as a way of supplementing subsistence agriculture, thus preserving heirloom corn varietals in the process. Once the cotton is hand-spun into thread, it is naturally dyed using local materials such as indigo, oak bark collected from the forests of the Sierra Sur, and cochineal from the Oaxaca valley.
