Our tortilla warmers are made from cotton grown in Oaxaca by Khadi, a project that involves over 400 artisans who farm, spin, and dye heritage white and native coyuchi cotton into the cloth that makes up these pouches, a crucial component of the tortilla-making process. The small farmers Khadi works with practice the ancestral tradition of planting the milpa, intercropping cotton with corn. Participating farmers are typically involved in the project as a way of supplementing subsistence agriculture, thus preserving heirloom corn varietals in the process. Once the cotton is hand-spun into thread, it is naturally dyed using local materials such as indigo, oak bark collected from the forests of the Sierra Sur, and cochineal from the Oaxaca Valley.

Whether you choose to use a clean kitchen towel or a designated tortilla warmer (like ours, which is made of organic cotton) is up to you! But we encourage you not to skip this final step of the cooking process, which is letting your tortillas steam as they rest, creating even more pliability.
How do I clean my Tortilla Warmer?
First, we recommend shaking out your tortilla warmer after every use. To clean small stains, gently dab stain with a wet towel and gentle dish soap. To clean the whole pouch, hand wash in cold water in the gentle soap or mild detergent of your choice.
