Blackberry Cheesecake Tamales

Bowl of blackberry cream cheese sweet tamales

Sweet tamales (tamales dulces) are one of our favorite holiday treats, for dessert or for breakfast, accompanied by champurrado or coffee.

The fillings and masa can feature fruit (pineapple, raisins, berries, coconut, figs), nuts, chocolate or nutella, and other sweeteners. Some recipes substitute salt for sugar, while others feature a plain masa with a sweet filling. This recipe for creamy, decadent blackberry cream cheese tamales from Mariana Alvarado of Masazul is a twist on a classic fruit cheesecake and a nod to Michoacán's tamales de zarzamora. We're using masa harina for the tamal dough, which lends an especially delicate, tender texture to the tamales.

These tamales are amazing! I made them for the first time last year and with much anticipation I’m finally making them again, today! This time I have followed the recipe exactly and used vegan butter versus coconut oil that I used last year. I also grew my blackberries this year and I’m so looking forward to eating them in the blackberry cream cheese tamale. Thank you for this recipe Maria and Malinda!!
