Champurrado is a chocolate-y version of an atole, a warm masa-based beverage enjoyed in various regions across Mexico. Its name is derived from the word champurrar, meaning "to mix," because this drink is traditionally frothed vigorously with a wooden mixing tool called a molinillo. While champurrado is typically prepared fresh for breakfast, we’ve given it the packaged treatment for the moments when you need a quick, cozy fix. Our Heirloom White Corn Masa Harina joins single-origin 70% dark chocolate sourced by Cru Chocolate (a Latina-owned B-corp), cane sugar, cinnamon, and salt for a delicious pick-me-up.

• Ingredients: Masienda Heirloom White Corn Masa Harina, dark chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, salt
• Non-dairy, non-GMO, gluten-free
• Five 1.5 oz single serve packets
Stovetop (recommended):
Pour packet into a saucepan with 1 cup of water, milk or preferred milk alternative. Bring to a simmer and whisk until chocolate has completely dissolved. Champurrado is ready when it looks thick and shiny (about 5 minutes).
Pour packet into a microwave safe mug. Add 1 cup of water, milk or preferred milk alternative. Stir with a fork or whisk. Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes, pausing to stir once per minute until chocolate has fully dissolved.

The Champurrado reminded me of the ones I tasted as a child in Mexico. I make it with a plant based milk, due to my dairy intolerance, adding extra milk for my preferred sweetness. I have been enjoying a cup in the evening while I watch TV for the perfect closing of my day!

Find Your Goldilocks

Like so many of our favorite foods, champurrado invites you to make it your own. Prepare as directed if you like it on the thicker side, or feel free to add more milk or water for a smoother consistency. Adding a dash of cayenne, clove or vanilla while simmering is also a delicious option – or a shot of orange liqueur to take it from breakfast beverage to happy hour. Is Champurrado vegan/dairy/gluten free?

Yes! Our Champurrado does not contain dairy. It mixes well with almond, oat, and soy milk, or even just water.
