Earthenware Tortillero Set by MiniSuper Studio
We’d seen plenty of beautiful tortilleros over the years, but our friend, MiniSuper Studio, really dropped the mic with this one. MiniSuper custom designed this piece exclusively for Masienda, collaborating across two states (Estado de México and Oaxaca) and three independent artisans to bring it all together. When we’re not using this set for keeping tortillas warm, we’ll use the tray for decoratively holding produce, like citrus, for an extra pop of color at the table.
About the tray: Husband-and-wife duo, Los Pichones (from Metepec in Estado de México), produce their own clay, using lead-free earth from a nearby quarry. Drawing on ancient Mesoamerican technique, they mix the clay with water and the flowering seeds of cattails. The seeds create a fibrous network inside the clay that is burned off in the firing, forging a webbed internal structure that is stronger and lighter than most barro (clay earthenware).
For the tortilla pouch: Khadi is an artisan textile producer based in San Sebastián Rio Hondo, Oaxaca. This family-owned organization collaborates directly with a cotton-growing group in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca called N’un Ndito (“living Earth” in Mixtec) to source organic heirloom cotton for all of its textiles. Within this same network, Khadi locally employs more than 400 artisans to spin, naturally dye and weave the cotton–all by hand–into a range of fabrics, including these used for our tortilleros.
As for the sewing, MiniSuper enlisted the help of Deisy Martínez, a talented seamstress based out of Oaxaca City. Deisy’s work had slowed considerably since the outset of the pandemic, which made the collaboration all the more impactful for all of us involved.
