Heirloom Black Beans (Oaxaca)

Heirloom Black Beans (Oaxaca)

$20.00$96.25

Clear

These heirloom black beans from Oaxaca are the most flavorful we’ve ever tried. Grown alongside corn and squash, they are an integral piece to the milpa tradition, one of the world’s oldest and most sustainable agricultural systems. By growing these three crops together, farmers are able to maintain the overall health of their soil to produce an abundance of deeply flavorful and nutritionally holistic crops.

We recommend cooking these beans with a few cloves of garlic, some white onion and a sprig or two of epazote or avocado leaf. They pair perfectly with roasted pumpkin and Masienda heirloom corn tortillas.

Definitely not your average black beans

Beautiful black beans and super tasty. Fresh enough to not need a soaking, my last batch was ready in about 2 hours on the stovetop. Arrived quickly with a nice note from Jorge too!

    Fantastic!

A great addition to the pantry. These aren’t your ordinary mealy, flavorless black beans from the supermarket. Rather, these cook up with the perfect creamy texture and a rich, earthy flavor that stands out in a way beans usually don’t. Great cooked with just salt, or just add a bit of onion, jalapeno and vinegar, maybe some ancho chile paste, and top with cotija and cilantro… Sometimes the beans are gone faster than the tacos…

So happy with this addition to the other excellent Masienda products! Having experienced the extreme disappointment of cooking commodity black beans purchased at a local store (let’s just say, never again!), I thoroughly appreciate how quickly and perfectly these beans cook and how delicious they are. I was being lazy one day and cooked them with nothing but water and a little salt (I normally add some carrots, celery, onions, garlic, and maybe some chilies and/or oregano) and they were still delicious. These beans have become a daily staple in our house. My husband, who was never interested in beans before, now comes home and asks, “Do we have beans?” Thank you, Masienda!

The best beans! Great to have on hand in bulk; great to have confidence in the sustainability behind how they’re grown.

    Ingredients Matter

As an American chef that lived in Mexico for a decade, I bought my ingredients at the “Mercado Sobre Ruedas” every weekend. When I returned to the States I was appalled at the dismal selection and quality of what was available. These black beans are the best I have ever had and are a staple in my pantry.

My kids and I LOVE these beans. They have great uniformity, and when cooked up have excellent texture and flavor. Incredible!

2 things: 1) not your regular beans, extra good taste. 2) supporting sustainable agriculture. oh, and a third: i order it, along with corn, ride my bike over, and pick it up. oops and 4) any time i have a question, they are there and really kind.

    Versatile and delicious

I was gifted a bag of these heirloom black beans and made a batch weekly throughout quarantine for soups, tacos, eggs. Season your stock pot liberally w chiles, garlic, cumin and put these on low all Sunday this Fall/Winter. I plan to gift all of my foodie family members with a bag this holiday.

Made a batch of these in my pressure cooker with garlic, onions, an orange, Worcestershire, pepper and salt. Finished with a little fresh parsley and cilantro & a little vinegar.
